The weatherman said this morning, that Palmdale had the record low for South Central Florida at 26F. I don't think we got that low here, but we certainly got down below freezing in areas of the yard that were not protected by the Live Oaks, or along the creek. It was a heavy, killing frost, the worst seen in this area in the last 20 years. Heavy frost laid down on all of the citrus. It looks as if the passion fruit are all lost, as is the papayas'. The Bananas are burnt, but should be alright, if this is the end of it. Some of the citrus that are particularly sensitive to cold got burnt (Key limes, mostly). The rest we will just have to see. It won't be until days end that the real damage will begin to show. When I walked outside this morning, you could smell the damaged foliage. It is a smell that is very difficult to describe. I can only say that it is an overwhelmingly sad smell, for it foretells of death for many of our plants. It is hard to nurture these living things, and see them damaged and dead as a result of something that you cannot possibly protect them from. We covered all that we could. We did all that was possible. Tonight, we hope for warmth. If not warmth, at least a respite from these killing frosts.
